Seaspan and Genoa Partner on Polar Icebreaker Project
Genoa Design International of Newfoundland recently secured an important contract with Seaspan Shipyards to provide technical design services for the Canadian Coast Guard's heavy polar icebreaker program. This agreement, finalized in October 2025, marks a significant achievement and highlights Genoa Design International's rising prominence within Canada's shipbuilding sector.
Under the contract terms, Genoa will deliver comprehensive design guidance for the Polar Class 2 icebreaker vessel. This engagement will necessitate substantial workforce expansion at the company's operations, with Genoa growing its team of naval architecture and marine systems designers to exceed 100 professionals. The expansion reflects the scale and complexity of the polar icebreaker project, which demands specialized expertise in extreme-environment vessel design and Arctic operational requirements.
Seaspan Shipyards is currently forming a pan-Canadian team to complete delivery of its Polar Icebreaker, with Genoa Design as a key partner in this national shipbuilding initiative. Genoa will leverage its digital design capabilities and technical expertise to support one of Canada's most strategic maritime infrastructure projects.
