Jan De Nul Expands Global Portfolio With Taiwan Offshore Wind Contracts and Maldives Reclamation Project

Jan De Nul, the Belgian marine contractor, has recently been awarded significant contracts in Taiwan for the installation of the Formosa 4 offshore wind farm export cables, as well as deploying its mega hopper, Cristobal Colon, for the Rasmale eco-city reclamation project in Maldives. “These contracts showcase how Jan De Nul is expanding their reach in renewable energy and infrastructure development across Asia-Pacific.”

Jan De Nul Achieves Taiwan Offshore Wind Cable Export Contract

Belgian marine contractor Jan De Nul has entered into an agreement with Synera Renewable Energy (SRE) to install export cables at Taiwan's Formosa 4 offshore wind farm. This project involves transporting, installing and protecting 60 kilometers of subsea HVAC cables for renewable energy transfer ashore; work will start in 2026 and run through 2027 with Jan De Nul utilizing its cable-laying vessel Willem de Vlamingh as its working vessel for this work.

Jan De Nul has expanded their presence in Taiwan's renewable energy sector significantly by signing an important contract to build Formosa 4, located 20 kilometers off Miaoli County's coast and featuring 35 turbines totaling 495 megawatts - enough power for approximately half a million households - providing green energy. Cable installation work for Greater Changhua 2b & 4 offshore wind farms has already begun under this framework agreement.

Jan De Nul has also been chosen as SRE's preferred contractor for export cables at Formosa 6 wind farm located 55 kilometers southwest of Formosa 4. Additionally, Fengmiao 1 installation of export cables are scheduled for 2026 providing continuous project portfolio outlook in Taiwan until 2028. According to Wouter Vermeersch of Subsea Cables Offshore Energy at Jan De Nul, these contracts demonstrate their firm commitment towards Taiwan's offshore wind development.

Cristóbal Colón Commences Maldives Reclamation Operations

Jan De Nul's mega hopper Cristóbal Colón, one of the two world's largest Trailer Suction Hopper Dredgers, commenced reclamation works in the Maldives on December 2, 2025. The vessel is undertaking land creation operations for Rasmale, the largest climate adaptation project in the Maldives and a 100 percent net zero carbon smart eco-city development. The deployment of Cristóbal Colón is expected to triple the speed of land creation for the ambitious project.

The Rasmale project represents a significant infrastructure initiative combining climate resilience with sustainable urban development. Jan De Nul's involvement with its advanced dredging capabilities demonstrates the company's role in large-scale environmental and infrastructure projects across the Indian Ocean region.
